Ophthalmology Bioassay Scientist / Senior Scientist

Cellomatics Biosciences Ltd. is one of the UK’s fastest growing Contract Research Organisations (CRO) providing specialist pre-clinical laboratory services to support the drug development programmes of biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Cellomatics Biosciences Ltd has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmology Bioassay Scientist / Senior Scientist to join our operations in Nottingham, UK. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative team and report to the Bioassay Study Manager.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ophthalmology, ocular biology, or related life sciences, with expertise in developing advanced human-based translational models, including iPSC-derived systems and organoid models, for ocular diseases. You will work in a highly collaborative, matrixed environment to design, execute, and interpret complex in vitro bioassays supporting drug discovery and early clinical development.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimise in vitro ocular models, including corneal, retinal, and epithelial systems
  • Design and implement iPSC-derived ocular models (e.g. retinal organoids, RPE models)
  • Develop and characterise 3D organoid and co-culture systems to model ocular disease biology
  • Design, execute, and analyse ocular disease-relevant bioassays (e.g. inflammation, barrier integrity, toxicity, efficacy)
  • Perform laboratory work and prepare SOPs and COSHH documentation
  • Analyse, interpret, and communicate scientific data (written and verbal)
  • Present findings to internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead method development, validation, transfer, and optimisation
  • Troubleshoot experimental challenges and ensure project delivery to client requirements
  • Prepare high-quality scientific reports
  • Maintain inventory of reagents and consumables
  • Drive continuous improvement in quality, productivity, and innovation
  • Support accreditation processes and client audits
  • Assist in business development and client interactions
  • Develop training modules within area of expertise
  • Support implementation of new equipment, systems, and processes

Qualifications and Essential Skills:

  • PhD or MSc in Ophthalmology, Stem Cell Biology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline, with at least 3 years of relevant industry or CRO experience
  • Strong experience in:

– Cell culture (primary cells and cell lines)

-iPSC culture, differentiation, and characterisation

-3D organoid development (e.g. retinal organoids, RPE systems)

-Ocular cell models (e.g. corneal epithelial cells, retinal cells, RPE cells)

-2D and 3D functional assays

-Barrier models and permeability assays

-Biochemical and molecular assays

-High-throughput screening

  • Experience working with human-derived ocular cells, iPSC-derived systems, or organoids is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated track record in assay development and translational model development
  • Excellent communication and data presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Proactive, adaptable, and results-driven mindset
  • Strong organisational and multitasking skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Location: 10 Colwick Quays Business Park, Road No 2, Colwick, NG4 2JY, Nottingham

Job Type: Full-time (37.5hrs per week)

Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum, depending on experience and skill set

Contract: Permanent
