Carina Furtado is the Procurement Manager at Cellomatics Biosciences and, as such, manages and oversees every order placed by the company fundamental to its day-to-day operational practices and, of course, it’s client-facing services. It is Carina’s responsibility to ensure that the sourcing of suppliers and supplies is reliable, consistent and on budget. Supplies needed for the scientists to carry out their trials and testing are key to ensuring a quality service is delivered to all Cellomatics’ clients.
Carina was born and raised in a small village near Lisbon, Portugal. Part of a large, extended family, it was through her family connections that she made her move to the UK.
Her first visit to England was as a teenager when she moved to London to improve her English and enjoy the spoils of a big city. Although she enjoyed her year in the capital, it proved to be an expensive option and so she took the decision to move back home.
In 2014, at the invitation and encouragement of another family member, her aunt, Carina returned to the UK following the completion of four years of study for her Bachelors and master’s degrees in chemical engineering. Carina joined her aunt and uncle in Nottingham and has since made the city her home.
Putting her engineering degree to good use, Carina first joined Naturally Scientific Technologies based at BioCity where she became involved with a promising R&D project which investigated the production of oil from plant cells. Although she enjoyed her time at the company and the signs for the project were positive, COVID got in the way and sadly put an end to the company’s aspirations.
Making a career change, in January 2021 Carina joined Cellomatics as a lab assistant on a part-time basis. Carina says, “working part time allowed me time with my new son, Alonso, and working in the lab was, in part, a continuation of part of the role I enjoyed at Naturally Scientific Technologies.”
However, another part of her previous role that she enjoyed was the managerial side and so Carina decided to enroll for a second master’s degree, this time in Project Management. And so, pulling her education, training and experience together, Carina now enjoys the best of all worlds and relishes her role as Procurement Manager at Cellomatics.
“No two days are the same,” comments Carina, “in every aspect of my life, I’m a problem solver, I love trouble shooting, and this job gives me all that and more!” To find out more about current vacancies at Cellomatics, visit our careers page
