Meet the team: Anushuya Tamang

In the first in our series of blogs, we meet team member Anushuya Tamang, who shares her career journey that led her to Cellomatics.

Anushuya was born and raised in Darjeeling in the north of India, and from an early age, she was keen to pursue a career path in science, choosing to study science in secondary school. Anushuya then went on to complete her BSc and Masters in Biotechnology at Bangalore University.

After her studies, Anushuya stayed in Bangalore and worked for a year at bioinformatics company Molecular Connections as a Senior Scientific Analyst, but quickly realised that her passion was to be in the lab. So, she opted to move to the UK to carry out further research and get back into laboratory work.

Anushuya secured a place at Nottingham Trent University where she completed her M.Res in Cancer Biology, this project converted into her PhD in Developmental Biology and Embryology.

In 2016, Anushuya decided that she had spent enough time in academia and started looking for different opportunities and scientist roles in industry. An exciting opportunity came up to join the, then newly formed, Cellomatics in Nottingham.

“Joining a start-up has helped me build up experience in a number of different job roles. My role has been very diverse, and I have been able to build up a broad range of experience. There was a lot to do in the early days, but it was a great challenge. When I joined industry, I had an open mind, and I have definitely got more out of my career at Cellomatics than I imagined I would, and have learned a lot on top of doing the science,” says Anushuya. “Cellomatics offers so much diversity – one day I am speaking with clients, then the next carrying out experiments. Managing the team and maintaining the lab and documentation helps to keep me on my toes – in a good way!”

Anushuya was the second employee at Cellomatics and has played an instrumental role in the growth and success of the company, helping to set up the laboratory facility, optimising protocols, and developing bespoke assays for client projects. After a year, Anushuya was promoted to Senior Scientist and in early 2020, she assumed the role of Bioassay Operations and Study Manager. Her role now involves working in the lab on client projects, training new staff on the techniques that she specialises in, designing bespoke assays and optimising assays.

Anushuya concludes, “The team spirit at Cellomatics is great, we work hard as a team, but know how to have fun as well. Anyone looking to develop their career at Cellomatics should have a hunger to learn – it is both challenging and exciting working in a small and fast-growing CRO, but in return, you learn a lot.”
