Huan Thompson joined Cellomatics in January 2024, having completed her MSc in Cancer Immunology and Biotechnology at the University of Nottingham the previous year. She is currently working as an Associate Scientist II at Cellomatics and is keen to progress further in her role.
In our latest blog we discuss Huan’s passion for science, her background and the work she undertakes at Cellomatics.
Fascinated by science from the start
Huan has been passionate about science from an early age, she particularly enjoyed learning about how things worked within biology and the ways in which these discoveries where made. She credits her secondary school science teacher for his passion for the life sciences and encouraging her to pursue her personal interest.
This inspired Huan to complete an undergraduate degree in Genetics, as she believed that there was no more fundamental way to understand how things work than at genetic level. During this degree, Huan found that the modules in immunology piqued her interest the most as she was fascinated by the multitude of ways in which bodies can stave off illness and the ways in which diseases such as cancer seemingly hide from the immune system altogether.
Industry experience
During the pandemic, Huan decided to see if this was a career she wanted to pursue and so decided to work in the pharmaceutical industry in the meantime. She worked for two years in manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry before deciding to move to Nottingham to undertake her masters in Cancer Immunology and Biotechnology.
Huan is particularly interested in the areas of immune-oncology and inflammation and the ways in which we can utilise the power of the immune system to fight against disease such as cancer.
Why Cellomatics?
Keen to look for a role within her field of interest, Huan came across Cellomatics and knew that the company would be a perfect fit for her. She wanted to find a role that would allow her to utilise the skills she had gained during her degree as well as continue to develop them in new and exciting ways. Cellomatics seemed to be exactly what she was looking for.
Roles and highlights at Cellomatics
Huan has enjoyed gaining hands-on experience with immunological and inflammation-related projects during her time at Cellomatics. She has appreciated the variety of projects she has had the opportunity to work on, no two have been the same! Huan has found that she is not just limited to her background in immunology and has been able to delve into molecular biology and even microbiology as she has grown and developed her knowledge and skillset.
Ultimately, Huan would like to continue to develop her skills and to gain further experience to move onto a Scientist role. She would like to become an experienced asset to the team at Cellomatics.
